“I’ve graduated now; I need a job for which I’ve spent 16 years obtaining an education. I’m tired of answering society’s questions: ‘Why don’t you have a job now that you’ve graduated? Where did you squander your poor father’s investment?'”
It’s easy for someone to say, “Just ignore those people; they won’t harm you!” But when you face these questions and taunts daily, it can drive you mad. “If you can’t bring comfort to someone’s life, please don’t create problems for them.”
Mental health issues are prevalent worldwide, especially among the younger generation. Pressure from society, family members, and one’s own needs can push a person towards mental health problems. Young individuals who have invested their time, their parents’ money, effort, hard work, dedication, and much more into their education, are struggling to find jobs due to limited opportunities and the country’s economic crisis. This 16 years of education represent more than just a number; they signify the student’s efforts, time, passion, dedication, and investment. They genuinely deserve job opportunities to sustain their households, enjoy life, and contribute to their country’s growth. This can only happen if the government pays serious attention to the economy and job prospects.
It’s now a common occurrence for anyone to experience mental health issues, especially in a few country like Pakistan, where the economy seems to be in perpetual crisis regardless of the government in power. Even those who were previously employed are losing their jobs due to the economic crisis. So, what can this country do for fresh, young graduates? To make matters worse, Pakistani society adds more toxicity to the younger generation with taunts and repeated questions about their careers and job prospects.
It’s puzzling why this society doesn’t take mental health issues seriously at all. There’s no concept of seeking a session with a psychologist to find relief. Making an appointment with a psychologist is considered shameful by many. In my opinion, everyone should visit a psychologist at least once a month. Overthinking, anxiety, depression, and trembling are all related to mental health issues. The main reason behind these problems is the inability to secure a job and build a better career. Therefore, our government and the people of Pakistan must work on addressing this issue.
Allow me to share the story of Sharum, the owner of “Sharum ki Sketchbook.” Sharum completed his BBA but couldn’t find a job due to economic issues and limited job opportunities. He succumbed to societal and family pressures and constant questioning, which led him into depression. He even attempted suicide but fortunately failed. He then met the famous YouTuber “Ducky Bhai,” who encouraged him to start his own YouTube channel and create content. Sharum excelled in sketching and provided voices for his characters. His content revolves around society and its situations, making it relatable to everyone. His channel now boasts 1.32 million subscribers, and he earns a decent income. Sharum now includes a motivational message at the end of all his videos.
Sharum serves as an inspiring example for this generation. Despite the ongoing economic meltdown and scarce job opportunities, we, as the younger generation, must find the strength to confront everything, especially mental health problems.
