As the world watches Olympics 2024 hosted in France, the inclusion of Israel, despite the Gaza genocide and human rights violations against Palestinians, has sparked significant controversy. Critics argue that Israel’s unpenalized participation highlights a double standard in how international sports bodies handle political and human rights issues.
The controversy is further fueled by Israel’s simultaneous participation in Eurovision 2024, which was met with public distaste. Many see this as emblematic of a broader issue: while Israel continues to enjoy a platform in international arenas, it is simultaneously being held accountable in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where a significant number of countries have joined proceedings against it. However, it is notable that very few of these countries are European, with Ireland, Belgium, and Luxembourg being among the rare exceptions. This disparity draws a stark contrast between the public’s growing frustration and the tepid response from many European nations.
The Hypocrisy of Penalties
In contrast, other countries have faced suspensions or bans for various infractions. Russia was barred from competing under its flag due to state-sponsored doping and the invasion of Ukraine, while South Africa was banned from 1964-1992 due to apartheid, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) was banned in 1972, and countries like North Korea have been isolated for political reasons, Yet, Israel, accused of genocide, remains unscathed in the Olympic arena, further emphasizing the inconsistencies in how international sports federations enforce rules and penalties.
Impact on Palestinian Athletes
The Israeli occupation has decimated sports infrastructure in Palestine, with athletes denied the facilities, resources, and freedoms needed to compete on the world stage. Since October 7, Israeli attacks have killed over 250 Palestinian sportsmen, with 265 athletes killed and 55 sports facilities bombed, some of which have been used as concentration camps. Violating the regulations of many sports organizations such as FIFA, it also directly contradicts and undermines the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) assertion that “the practice of sport is a human right.”. Severe restrictions on movement make training and international competition nearly impossible, leaving Palestinians at a great disadvantage.
Global Protests and Boycotts
This hypocrisy has sparked global protests from human rights activists and sports enthusiasts. Demonstrators demand the IOC take a firmer stance against Israel, reminiscent of the actions taken against apartheid South Africa. Calls for boycotts of Israeli athletes and events echo the broader Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to apply international pressure on Israel to change its policies.
Voices from the Sports World
Prominent athletes have joined the outcry against the injustices faced by Palestinians. Footballer Mohamed Salah has highlighted the plight of Palestinian children, while NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom has condemned global human rights violations, including those by Israel. Algerian athletes like Messaoud Dris and Fethi Nourine have even refused to compete against Israeli athletes, and have instead faced penalties such as being disqualified or suspended for up to 10 years. Former NBA player Tariq Abdul-Wahad stated, “Decision to allow Israel’s participation in the 2024 Olympics highlights ‘hypocrisy’ within international organizations.”
The Suppression of Pro-Palestinian Voices
Adding to the controversy, people voicing support for Palestine face arrest and suppression, including protestors. In stark contrast, Israeli individuals receive support and backing. This disparity is particularly stark in France, where pro-Palestinian protestors have been arrested, highlighting the country’s troubling history of mistreatment against Muslims and political activism. France has a controversial history of mistreating ethnic and religious minorities, particularly Muslims. The country’s draconian laws, such as the ban on religious symbols, for example, the Hijab, disproportionately affect Muslim communities. This has contributed to a broader culture of discrimination and marginalization.
The ongoing situation raises critical questions about the role of politics and human rights in international sports. Whilst the Olympics strive to promote peace, respect, and equality, Israel’s unpenalized participation amid allegations of genocide in Palestine blatantly contradicts these ideals. This glaring hypocrisy exposes the deep flaws within international sports organizations, which seem more interested in maintaining the status quo than addressing grave injustices. As ordinary citizens, we must raise awareness, support Palestinian athletes, and demand policy changes to hold Israel accountable.
By standing in solidarity with Palestinian athletes and advocating for justice, we can expose the double standards and push for a future where the Olympics truly reflect their motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together.”
Very well researched report. This is something which really needed a highlight.
