This International Women’s Day, Google reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Pakistani women. Acknowledging their potential and aspirations, they gave prominence to the significant role women can play in the country’s advancement and prosperity when equipped with relevant skills and resources.
And we, The Current x Aap Ki Awaaz, are proud to be the first women-led news platform in Pakistan that is breaking barriers in the world of digital media.
Google News Initiative (GNI) has partnered with The Current, whose mission is to actively involve younger audiences, thereby producing content that authentically meets their expectations from a Pakistani digital media platform. And with the support of GNI, Aap Ki Awaaz compliments this goal by closely collaborating with students and young professionals who possess a keen interest in current affairs.
We mentor the passionate youth and assist them in preparing publishable content as we are committed to impart comprehensive training that enables them to perceive the landscape of digital media ethically and holistically, recognizing its significance for the future and society.
To give an example, approximately 12 members, including our interns, volunteered to work with our team during the election week, which happened only a few days back. While Aap Ki Awaaz trainings are still ongoing and the students have been preoccupied with their university deadlines, it was refreshing to see their grasp of the lessons imparted by journalists over the past couple of months.
Over all, so far, the platform has trained 120 students in digital journalism. In a span of just 12 months, 36 hours of in-person training were conducted, and 50+ blogs have been written by students.
Together, with Google, our goal is to train young aspiring journalists, including women, and to enhance newsroom accessibility and reporting experience.
