“Thousands have lived without love but not one without water” — W.H Auden
Narrated by Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman, the documentary unravels how even though 80 per cent of the planet Earth is covered by water and three billion people depend on the sea for various reasons, it has come under threat today because of advancing technology. Due to the rise of industrialisation and overpopulation, water bodies are getting more polluted every day due to excessive garbage dumping and expansion of cities. Due to this, many families, especially from the lower class, are denied access to a critical need. Not only is this happening in Pakistan but all around the world, as we witness the destruction of marine life.
“The sea does not like to be restrained” — Rick Riordan
Due to global warming, there are severe consequences to marine life that scientists are calling the world’s attention to. Coral reefs are bleaching and dying out due to oil spills caused by ships and rising sea temperatures, which can cause the majority of marine life to die out.
There is also a rapid decrease in ocean life as overfishing is rising in areas like Asia and Africa, according to the United Nations (UN). The report highlighted that there are 4.6 million fishing vessels and fish hunters around the world.
“No Water, No Life
No Blue, No Green” — Sylvia Eagle
Due to excessive waste dumping by corporations and the rising global temperatures, many marine species are dying out fast and glaciers are also melting because of which there will be more floods in coastal cities in the future. As Pakistan is the fifth most climate change-vulnerable country in the world, it is necessary that subjects like climate change are taught in schools and universities, so more students can learn about ways they can preserve water.
Overpopulation is also a threat towards growing climate problems, especially risking the chances of providing safe and clean water facilities to our upcoming generation. This is the responsibility of the government and private facilities alike to educate the population on ways to prevent deforestation. It is extremely important to prevent corporations from producing excessive waste and pollution in water bodies.
“We know that when we protect our oceans, we are protecting our future” — Bill Clinton
This documentary urges its audience to encourage their countries to spread better awareness about the risks of climate change, and it is Pakistan’s responsibility to ensure that our natural resources do not die out quickly. Pakistan needs to prevent corporations from excessively relying on nonrenewable resources like coal, oil and gas, and work towards more sustainable resources that can help protect our water life.
