Role of technology in shaping the future of work

Technology is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of work, and it’s an area Pakistan must prioritise. As the country continues to push for economic advancement, the integration and evolution of technology will be key to transforming its labour landscape. Already, technological advancements are changing how work is done in Pakistan.

The emergence of freelancing platforms has empowered many Pakistanis to work remotely, bypassing conventional employment systems. Sites like Upwork and Fiverr have opened doors to international markets, enabling local freelancers to offer their services globally. This shift has not only generated employment but also contributed to the inflow of foreign currency.

Recognising the importance of digital progress, the Pakistani government introduced the Digital Pakistan Policy in 2018. This initiative is geared toward strengthening the IT sector, improving digital infrastructure, and boosting e-commerce and digital literacy. These efforts aim to enhance job creation and elevate the global competitiveness of local businesses.

Nevertheless, the country faces notable obstacles in fully leveraging technology. With a large youth population, there is a pressing need for skill development and digital training to ensure young people can thrive in a tech-driven world. In addition, digital infrastructure remains underdeveloped in many regions, limiting access to reliable internet and online services. To overcome these barriers, both government and private entities must prioritise investment in digital education and infrastructure.

Adapting to technological shifts will be crucial in determining the direction of work in Pakistan. As automation and AI continue to evolve, certain jobs will disappear while new roles will emerge. To stay relevant, workers will need to cultivate skills that complement technology, such as creativity, analytical thinking, and problem-solving. This will require educational reforms and ongoing workforce training to prepare individuals for the demands of a digital economy.

In summary, technology is a cornerstone of Pakistan’s future workforce. While it presents immense opportunities, it also brings challenges that must be met with strategic planning and collaboration. By focusing on digital literacy, infrastructure, and education, Pakistan can unlock the full potential of technology to fuel its economic progress. A united effort from both the public and private sectors will be essential to ensure equitable access to these benefits and to position the country competitively on the global digital stage.
