When scrolling turns toxic: Negative effects of social media

Social media is a big part of our daily routine. Apps like Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and TikTok are used by millions of people to stay in touch, share photos and watch fun videos. These platforms have many benefits, but they also bring some serious negative effects, especially for students and young people.

One of the biggest problems is how social media affects our mental health. When we see other people posting pictures of their perfect lives, we sometimes feel like our own life is not good enough. This can make us feel sad, insecure or even depressed. Many students start comparing their looks, clothes or lifestyle with others, which is not healthy. What we often forget is that people only show the best parts of their lives online.

Another major issue is addiction. Social media is designed to keep us scrolling. We tell ourselves, “Just five minutes,” but it often turns into hours. This time could be used for studying, resting or spending time with family. Too much screen time can also harm our sleep and make it hard to focus on our goals.

Cyberbullying is also a big problem. Some people use social media to send rude messages, make fun of others or spread false rumours. This kind of behaviour can seriously hurt someone’s feelings and damage their self-confidence. No one deserves to be treated like that. We should always be kind and think before we post anything online.

Another issue is the spread of fake news. Many people believe everything they see on social media without checking if it’s true. This can create confusion and panic, especially during important events or health emergencies. It’s important to check the facts before sharing any post.

Privacy is also a concern. When we post personal information – like our photos, location or contact number – it can be misused by others. Even if we delete something, it may still stay online. That’s why we should always be careful about what we share.

Lastly, social media affects how we connect with people in real life. Many people prefer texting instead of meeting in person. This can make our relationships feel less real or deep.

In conclusion, social media has many good features, but it also comes with serious downsides. It can affect our mental health, waste our time and harm real-life relationships. We should try to use social media in a smart and balanced way, take breaks, think before we post and enjoy life beyond the screen.
